What can be verified about the lawsuit, commercial distribution and settlement—and which release claims remain disputed.
In February 2007, People reported that Kim Kardashian had filed suit over Vivid Entertainment’s planned distribution of a private recording made with Ray J. The complaint sought damages, legal costs and profits connected to the release.
The lawsuit later ended in a settlement and commercial distribution proceeded. Public reporting does not by itself resolve how the distributor first obtained the material. That distinction has been blurred repeatedly in later coverage.
Ray J has described the release as planned, while Kardashian has described the recording as private and opposed its publication. A 2022 Newsweek review found evidence of an agreement but said the initial route to the distributor remained unclear. Renewed litigation produced further allegations and denials; this archive treats them as claims unless resolved by reliable evidence or a court finding.
